Donations – your saving grace by saving tax?

Donations to certain registered organisations can in most cases actually reduce your tax bill to SARS – provided that the organisation is registered with SARS as a Section 18A Public Benefit Organisation.

This would include organisations like NSRI, Red Cross Children’s fund, Cape Jewish Welfare Council Trust, Meals on Wheels etc but also to “donations” to certain schools where they are registered with SARS including those ex gratia payments requested by several private schools to secure a place at the school not included in your child’s school fees – in order to claim as a tax deduction, the organisation must provide a certificate for your donation which is to be submitted with your tax return.

Please check with the organisation or school you support whether they can provide you with a Section 18A certificate – you may be adding an extra benefit to your support!
