How to claim your share of $88-billion in unclaimed benefits

“This article was first published by The Daily Maverick”.

Towards the end of last year, I have to admit I was somewhat tickled when a tracing agent looking for my ex-husband contacted both my mother and me. Turns out he was due some unclaimed benefits from a pension fund he belonged to in the first year of our marriage. Anyhow, the reason for this anecdote is that the financial services industry is currently on a massive drive to reunite erstwhile beneficiaries with their unclaimed benefits – from retirement savings and investment payouts, to dormant bank accounts and dividends.

Speaking at the annual Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) industry conference last week, commissioner Unathi Kamlana confirmed that a whopping R88-billion was at hand.

Here’s how you can find out if you are owed any money and claim it:

Visit the JSE website on jse.co.za/claimit and complete the form, or contact the JSE Claim It call centre on 0861 401 105 to find out if you are entitled to unclaimed dividends.

☎️ Contact any former employers or their HR departments.

Visit the FSCA unclaimed benefit search engine where you fill in your details and it runs a search to see if any matches come up.

You will need to provide:

A valid South African ID

Your current contact information, such as a cellphone and landline number, as well as an email address.

Proof of address.

✅ The JSE will then verify whether your details match those of the shareholders in the registries.

The JSE has joined forces with a number of listed companies to reunite South Africans with their unclaimed dividends. These include African Media Entertainment, Finbond, Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon, YeboYethu, Advtech, Cashbuild, Super Group, Naspers, Mpact, Reunert, Merafe Resources, Northam Platinum Holdings, Growthpoint Properties, Old Mutual, Sasol, Sasol SA/Khanyisa, Quilter and Sasol Inzalo.
